Weaverville – Last week November 9–13, Curtis Wright Outfitters held an adult Fly Fishing Camp at Lake Logan near Waynesville. The Asheville area has over 3,000 miles of streams and rivers within 90 miles of the downtown area—perfect for fly fishing. Lake Logan is in the Pisgah National Forest with a stunning and pristine natural mountain backdrop. Several rivers, including the West Fork of the Pigeon River, feed into Lake Logan. Six lucky adult participants were able to attend this fall camp with Joshua Garris, Will Loftus, Scott McJunkin, and Craig Byers as their guides.
Fall is considered prime trout fishing season.
The campers managed to get away from their daily routines and enjoyed being outdoors, wading through the rushing river waters and learning more about casting so they could be sure to cast to an exact spot to land a fish. What a wonderful way to spend the day. In addition, the campers, who stayed in the cabins around the lake, were treated to some delicious hot meals prepared by the Lake Logan staff.
Western North Carolina and this area has a national reputation for its fly fishing—where you can catch big brown trout, brook trout, rainbow trout, and smallmouth bass. Visitors come from all over specifically to fly fish. Last week at the Curtis Wright Camp an introduction to fly fishing, trout, and fly fishing equipment were all taught by expert guides. Experienced guides taught campers how to txie three flies and several of the most important techniques in fly tying—not an easy art—as well as an introduction to entomology (the study of insects) and fly selection associated with fly fishing. Lessons focused on this geographic area.
Curtis Wright held educational classes for the campers — beginners’ fly fishing class and beginners’ fly tying for two mornings. The campers then took a half-day guided trip on the rivers and lake. All needed equipment was provided by Curtis Wright Outfitters, which is located on Main Street in Weaverville. However, they encouraged the participants to bring their own equipment. Sadly, last week had incessant rain and showers, but somehow the group was able to get out with plenty of rain gear to enjoy the thrill of actually catching a fish—and even spotted a bald eagle! This year was the second that Curtis Wright has hosted this Fall Camp for Adults.
The next camp will be mid-April 19th 2021 and will again take place at Lake Logan. The cost is $1,265 for single occupancy and $1,065 for double. Non-participants can join as well. The price includes all gear needed, lodging, and meals. It does not include NC fishing licensure or any amount of gratuity. The Camp is for all skill levels and can be customized to individual campers. Another camp is expected for fall 2021, but those dates have not been set yet. Do note, this is a catch-and-release camp.
As for the rest of this fall, Curtis Wright Outfitters will be doing guided fly fishing trips, sporting clays, and Falconry outings all winter long. They will also be offering fly tying classes starting in January. Curtis Wright Outfitters offers outdoor apparel, fly fishing gear and apparel, guided fly fishing trips for all experience levels, and destination fly fishing travel packages.
