Asheville – The COVID-19 pandemic has upended the workforce and left many job seekers in its wake. Whether it’s closure of your employment location, or a pivot in your career, many people are searching for new employment opportunities.
Career Quest is a free webinar series offered by Goodwill Industries of Northwest North Carolina. The program, which began in early 2020, is the first of its kind for the corporation.
Find the field that fits
The virtual fair gives job seekers the opportunity to explore new careers by hearing directly from professionals in fields such as healthcare, manufacturing, skilled trades, retail, service industries, and hospitality.
“Job seekers often have preconceived ideas about what it’s like to work in manufacturing, hospitality, or other industries that discourages them from applying to those jobs,” says Jody Stevenson, the skills and training manager at Goodwill. “With Career Quest, people can get an inside look at these industries, ask questions and learn of career paths they didn’t know about.”
An employer hosts a Career Quest session each month to meet with potential applicants, teach job skills and dive into their company. On January 28, Eaton Corporation hosted the first session of the year. Eaton Corporation is a global technology leader in electrical systems for power quality, distribution, and control with more than 3,600 employees in North Carolina across 18 facilities and offices statewide. The presenters discussed the topic of ‘quality’ as the driving force in modern manufacturing and how it has helped define the culture at Eaton Corporation.
“We’re really excited about the opportunity to partner with Goodwill Industries on this Career Quest. It’s such an awesome initiative. Manufacturing jobs, especially in the Asheville area, go very much under the radar,” says John Russler, plant manager at the Eaton plant on Haywood Road.
The Asheville Hotel Group will host the next session on February 18, followed by Emerson Automotive Solutions on March 25.
“We see these opportunities as kind of an ‘informational interview.’ We are trying to pull back the curtain if you will and give people a real time and first-hand look at these industries.”
