Weaverville – The North Buncombe Black Hawks had a great Friday night as they sailed to a decisive win over the North Henderson Knights 27-7.
Both teams were scoreless in the first quarter of play, but the Black Hawks were able to score two touchdowns in the second quarter of the game to the Knights one.
North Henderson scored their first and only score off a 36-yard pass from Jaxson Willis (5) to Jaylon Croft (7). Moisis Herra kicked the point after attempt (PAT), making 0-7 Knights. But the Black Hawks’ Joe Jones (26) ran for 31 yards for North Buncombe’s first and then 24 yards along with Yimi Montes’ two good PAT to make it 14-7 Black Hawks at the half.
Defense from both teams was tough during the first half and didn’t let up in the second half—North Buncombe’s third touchdown didn’t come until late in the third quarter. With only 36 seconds left in the third, Jones scored his third touchdown off a 51-yard pass from Quarterback Walker Corbin (16) and with Montes’ PAT would end the quarter 21-7.
The last points of the game were scored at the 5:20 mark of the fourth quarter when Corbin passed for five yards to Caleb Lominac (22), but Montes’ PAT was blocked, leaving the ending score 27-7.
The Black Hawks rushed 33 times for 218 yards during the game with 10 of 13 passes completed for 182 yards for a total of 400 yards of offense during the game.
Jones lead North Buncombe in rushing yards with 19 attempts for 115 yards (avg about six yards per attempt), followed by Lominac with nine attempts for 83 yards (avg about 9.2 yards per attempt) and Corbin on five attempts for 20 yards (avg about four yards per attempt).
The Black Hawks are now 3-1 overall and 2-1 in conference play. North Buncombe will play a conference game against the undefeated A.C. Reynolds Rocket at the Rocket’s home field Friday night.
