Leicester – The Erwin Lion’s Club is now sponsoring Boy Scouts of America troop 101 and 4101 and the Cub Scouts. The Daniel Boone Council recognized the club as the 2020 charter organization of the year in an April 1 event.
“After meeting with the Lions Club in the fall, they decided to become our chartered organization. They have a wonderful facility, they have an indoor and outdoor space with room for storage,” says Tracy Smith, the BSA charter organization representative.
The scoutmaster presented the award to the president of the Lion’s Club two weeks ago to honor their partnership. The scouts hope this is just the beginning of a long-term friendship between the organizations. Each year, they anticipate rechartering with the Lion’s Club.
“We’re hoping it’s a long term relationship. We plan to help them with some of their events. We’re also going to be doing some real sprucing up around [the Lion’s Club],” Smith says. “In the fall, we raked all the leaves up for them and put up a bat box with a little garden in. We’ll eventually paint rooftops for them.”
The scouts have also thoroughly enjoyed the use of the Lion’s Club. With most events being outside due to COVID-19, the club’s ample outdoor space has been put to great use. The scouts have camped outside and used the outdoor space’s tables. The indoor space has been used for Eagle Scout projects as well.
The scouts meet every Monday night at 7 pm. Visitors and children are welcome, but everyone must wear a mask. Both girls and boys are welcome to join the Boy Scouts of America; Leicester has boys and girls troops that run through the summer.
The Lion’s Club meets every Thursday night at 6:30 pm.
