Leicester/West Asheville – Buncombe County Commissioner Terri Wells, who lives in Leicester and represents the area, when asked to respond to the farm fires replied, “It has been a long week with a lot of loss in our community with the passing of dear family friends, as well as the barn fires. Our farmers have suffered a significant loss of their hay, as well as losing important barn structures and equipment. Beyond the farm business impact of the loss of the barns, there is a deep sadness for those in our community, who like me, love our rural landscape and the barns that are very much part of that landscape. Our community is big-hearted and strong, and we will work to ensure that our farmers are supported. There are efforts underway to help with hay and the NCDA&CS Emergency Program is assessing need and potential assistance.
“It is disturbing that anyone would intentionally set barn fires, and we are fortunate to have the quick and professional response of our first responders. Our fire department personnel, EMS, and Sheriff’s Department were collaborating throughout the day to keep our community safe. I appreciate them for their professionalism and service to our community.”
