Charlotte – The Mint Museum hosts Picasso Landscapes: Out of Bounds as part of the Picasso Celebration 1973–2023.
Picasso Landscapes: Out of Bounds, debuting February 11–May 21, 2023, at The Mint Museum in uptown Charlotte, is the first traveling exhibition in the United States to explore Pablo Picasso’s lifelong exploration with landscapes. The Mint is the first of only two venues in the United States—and the only venue on the East Coast—to host Picasso Landscapes. The Mint’s exhibition will be the only United States museum exhibition on view April 8, 2023, the 50th anniversary of the artist’s death, that is included in the Picasso Celebration. The Picasso Celebration 1973–2023 is structured around some 50 exhibitions and events held at renowned cultural institutions in Europe and North America that commemorate works by the Spanish artist.
“We are honored to be the opening venue of this exhibition, which was organized to mark the 50th anniversary of Picasso’s death. “This beautiful collection of Picasso’s landscapes was assembled from private collections and museums across the globe and will be seen together for the first time at The Mint Museum,” says Todd Herman, president and CEO at The Mint Museum.
From his earliest days in art school until the year before his death, Picasso painted landscapes to express his perceptions of the world, including the modern city, wartime occupation, and the industrialization of rural France. Organized by the American Federation of Arts and curated by Laurence Madeline, chief curator for French National Heritage, the exhibition includes works from 14 different art institutions and private collections from around the world that showcase his creative evolution throughout his prolific career.
An audio tour in English and Spanish was specifically created for the Mint’s exhibition that charts 10 prominent places of travel and relocation throughout Picasso’s life that are featured in the exhibition works. In addition, a rich array of historical films, photographs, and periodicals will be featured in the exhibition to contextualize the depth and breadth of the artist’s expression of landscape. Newsreels of specific events and locations that influenced the artist, including seaside villages of the 1930s and a newly liberated Paris in 1944 that add historical relevancy throughout the exhibition. Photographs and vintage postcards offer further insight into different places in time that fostered both inspiration and a strong sense of personal identity for the artist.
Thanks to generous funding from corporate and individual sponsors, including Bank of America, Duke Energy, the City of Charlotte, and Mecklenburg County, the Mint’s iteration of Picasso Landscapes will welcome students in grades K–12 and art teachers at no cost, and more than 4,000 students as part of school groups.
