Weaverville – Overcast skies threatened rain outside the Community Center at Dottie Sherrill Knoll while singers, participants, and speakers prepared to observe Memorial Day inside Weaverville’s newest facility. The annual Memorial Day event, deeply ingrained in Weaverville’s tradition, drew a diverse crowd eager to pay tribute and honor the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.

As the event unfolded, the attendees were treated to a heartfelt medley of patriotic songs performed by the renowned Reuter Center Singers, whose harmonious voices resonated through the room, evoking a sense of unity and reverence. Their moving rendition of each melody set the tone for the solemn occasion and stirred emotions within every individual present.

Following the inspiring musical tribute, the event was illuminated with nationalism as the North Buncombe High School Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) presented the flags. With unwavering precision and unwavering dedication, the JROTC cadets carried out their duties, symbolizing the unwavering commitment to duty and honor that embody the spirit of Memorial Day. Accompanied by the resonant voices of the Reuter Center Singers, the National Anthem echoed through the halls, resonating with a deep sense of patriotism and gratitude.

Amidst the patriotic atmosphere, Reverend Eric Dimsdale of the esteemed Piney Mountain Baptist Church stepped forward, offering a heartfelt invocation to honor the fallen heroes and their families. His words carried a message of solace, unity, and gratitude, providing a spiritual foundation for the event and underscoring the day’s significance.

Welcoming the gathering with warmth and gratitude, Weaverville Councilman Doug Jackson took the stage, expressing his heartfelt appreciation to all in attendance. His words acknowledged the importance of Memorial Day and the solemn responsibility to remember and honor those who have given their lives in service to their country. Councilman Jackson’s presence highlighted the close-knit community’s commitment to preserving the memories of their fallen heroes.

The commemorative event continued as the Reuter Center Singers returned to the stage, their voices soaring with passion and grace as they performed “The Folded Flag.” This poignant tribute encapsulated the indomitable spirit of remembrance, capturing the sacrifices made by countless servicemen and women and the enduring resilience of their families left behind. As the final notes resonated through the Community Center, a profound silence enveloped the room, allowing the audience to reflect on the magnitude of the day’s significance.

Jackson then presented the guest speaker Commander Master Chief (ret.) Edward Moreno, who, before he gave his speech, commented how, as an enlisted navy man came to the Weaverville Community to court his future wife. How he came to be embraced by the community led to his falling in love with the area and his future wife-to-be. He spoke about the mentors that helped mold him.

He then gave his Memorial Day remarks saying, “Today is a sacred occasion. It’s Memorial Day. We gather to pay tribute and honor to the brave men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice to secure the freedoms we hold dear. I stand here as a humble servant carrying the weight of history and the stories that follow heroes.” Moreno spoke for about 10 minutes on the start of Memorial Day and the significance of the day.

After Moreno concluded, a member of the Weaverville Fire Department played Taps on an auto-bugle, after which Weaverville resident Howard Dusenbery played Amazing Grace on the bagpipes. The North Buncombe JROTC then retired the flags, and Rev. Dimsdale closed the event with a benediction.

In Weaverville’s Community Center at Dottie Sherrill Knoll, the annual Memorial Day event proved once again that the indelible bond between a community and its fallen heroes remains unbreakable. Through music, words, and poignant tributes, the attendees collectively reaffirmed their commitment to honor the sacrifice and memory of those who selflessly gave everything for their country.

As the event concluded, the overcast skies outside broke into the sunshine as if to smile upon the event and hold a newfound reverence, mirroring the respect witnessed within the walls of the community center.
