Hendersonville – United Way of Henderson County has made a powerful move in the fight against food insecurity by awarding $50,000 to 13 local public-facing food pantries and distribution sites. These funds, raised through a special initiative, aim to address the growing challenges surrounding access to food in the county.

Addressing Food Insecurity Amid Rising Costs

Denise Cumbee Long, the Executive Director of United Way, expressed concern over the rising inflation and soaring food costs that have contributed to nearly 13% of the county’s population experiencing food insecurity. With food prices skyrocketing by 16% since 2020, local food pantries face the daunting task of keeping up with the increasing demand. Recognizing the critical role these organizations play as a lifeline for hungry families, United Way is committed to supporting their vital work.

A Successful Fundraiser with Remarkable Community Support

United Way’s fundraising efforts were kickstarted as part of the Days of Caring initiative in May. Thanks to a generous matching gift from local philanthropists Sue and Tom Fazio, the organization not only reached its $50,000 goal but also had the opportunity to double every dollar donated by the community. This tremendous community support showcases the solidarity in addressing food insecurity and making a meaningful impact.

Supporting Small and Large Distribution Sites

Acknowledging the crucial role that smaller food distribution sites play in meeting community needs, United Way ensured that its support extended to these organizations as well. Gale Hoots, a lead volunteer at Hope United Methodist Church in East Flat Rock, expressed gratitude, highlighting that the funds received will help them continue to serve an average of 85-90 individuals each week through programs like the Welcome Table meal, Monday morning breakfast, and the Blessing Box.

Volunteers and Additional Funding: Pillars of Community Assistance

Chip Lunsford, a dedicated volunteer at the Community Food Pantry in Edneyville, emphasized the importance of additional funding during this time of increased need. The support received will significantly aid their efforts in feeding approximately 2,000 individuals in the community every month. As food prices continue to rise, the value of such assistance becomes truly invaluable.
