Hendersonville – Retired Army major Bob Johnson, a member of the Henderson County VFW Post 5206, will be speaking about the Henderson County Wall of Honor program at 2 p.m. on November 11, 2023. The talk will be at the downtown library in Hendersonville and is open to the public. In this program, the VFW puts veteran’s military awards in 8” x 10” shadow boxes and will place them on the wall of the VFW building at 5-points in Hendersonville. The VFW building in currently being remodeled and will reopen in the summer of 2024. The Wall of Honor program is open to all Henderson County veterans including those with service in the active component, Reserves, and/or National Guard. Service can be in peace time or war time.
So far, the program has included veterans from World War II, Korea, the Cold War, Vietnam, the Gulf War, Afghanistan, and Iraq. These veterans served in the Army, Army Air Force, Navy, Air Force, or the Marine Corps. Participants in the program range from those with one term of service in peace time to those with 30-year careers.
Among the reasons to have this program is that, over time and generations, veteran’s military awards are lost or thrown away. In this program, they will be preserved and placed in a public building for permanent display. The program is at no cost to the veteran. In cases where veterans have lost their awards or record of service, form DD 214, the VFW is able to replace these records and awards.
The library is at 301 North Washington Street in downtown Hendersonville. The talk will be in the Kaplan Auditorium.
