The Weaverville Veterans Day Observance is scheduled for Friday, November 10, 2023, and will take place at 11 am in the warm and inviting setting of the Community Center at Lake Louise.

This year, we are privileged to have Lieutenant Colonel David Thorneloe of Asheville as our distinguished speaker. Lt. Col. Thorneloe’s illustrious career spans twenty years of dedicated service in the United States Army, including remarkable deployments with the 101st Airborne Division in Afghanistan and as a peacekeeper in Sinai, Egypt. Beyond his military service, Lt. Col. Thorneloe is a respected attorney and currently holds the position of Deputy Staff Judge Advocate of the North Carolina Army National Guard. He has also been an Assistant United States Attorney in Asheville since 2009. His unique blend of military and legal experience promises to offer profound insights and a meaningful address.

From 2013 through 2014, he deployed with the North Carolina National Guard to serve as a peacekeeper in Sinai, Egypt. He holds expertise in domestic military operations where he has served the community in response to natural disasters and civil disturbances. Thorneloe is now a student at the U.S. Army War College where he is working towards a Masters of Strategic Studies. In his civilian career, since 2009 Lieutenant Colonel Thorneloe has served as an Assistant United States Attorney in Asheville, North Carolina where he prosecutes white collar crime, crimes against children, and violent crime.

In addition to our esteemed speaker, the event will be graced by the musical talents of renowned local residents, Howard and Kirsten Dusenbery, who will provide a moving and patriotic musical backdrop.

The observance will begin with the Invocation and Benediction, delivered by Reverend Willis Gains, the esteemed pastor of Brittains Cove Presbyterian Church. His words will serve as a reminder of the spiritual dimensions of service and sacrifice.

To pay our respects to the fallen heroes, Taps and a Rifle Salute will be performed by the dedicated personnel of the Weaverville Fire and Police Departments, respectively. These ceremonial gestures are a heartfelt tribute to those who have served our nation with honor and valor.

This event is open to all members of the community, and we welcome everyone to attend. The Community Center at Lake Louise offers ample parking space, accessible behind and below the center, to accommodate all who wish to join us in honoring our veterans.

The Weaverville Veterans Day Observance is an opportunity for our community to come together, express gratitude to those who have served our nation, and reflect on the sacrifices made by our veterans and their families.
