Asheville – Already a devastating issue, substance abuse in America has spiraled out of control since the pandemic began. According to the CDC (Center for Disease Control and Prevention), 106,363 individuals died as a result of drug overdoses from August 2022 to August 2023. Deaths rose nearly 1½ times (compared to the year before COVID hit). There were 74,679 drug-related deaths recorded from March 2019 to March 2020.
While assessing the number of people with SUD (Substance Use Disorder) is difficult, the National Institute on Drug Abuse estimated that over 40 million Americans were addicted to drugs or alcohol in 2020. Given the rise in overdoses, that number has certainly increased drastically.
Abject poverty, homelessness, stress from working multiple jobs, and the inflated costs of everything from food to housing no doubt contribute to the number of people who have turned to mood-altering substances for a mental or emotional escape.
This, of course, adversely affects not only the addict but also their loved ones.
Aside from the listed stressors, untreated mental health disorders are also often a factor in whether or not a person uses drugs or alcohol to cope. Mental healthcare is inaccessible to much of the country, even to those with insurance for physical healthcare. Without that access, more Americans suffer from addiction. More addiction leads to more crime, homelessness, destruction to families and communities, and preventable deaths.
Treatment centers have been a solution for many for close to a century. Asheville, with its rich history of therapeutic facilities, has been a destination for mental healthcare treatment for decades.
With a grand opening event on Thursday, February 8th, Ritual Recovery is taking a comprehensive approach to battling the causes of Substance Use Disorder.
