Asheville – The Asheville Art Museum is inviting the community to a free Community Day on Saturday, April 6, from noon to 5pm to celebrate the exhibition, The New Salon: A Contemporary View. The event will feature public tours of The New Salon, hands-on activities, nail art, a documentary film screening of Auto-Morphosis, and music by DJ Meow Meow on the Museum’s Plaza.
During Community Day, visitors can enjoy a mix of hands-on activities, spotlight talks, tarot readings, and express tours. The New Salon exhibition reimagines the traditional salon in art history as a place of rebellion against the norm, showcasing diverse and fantastical narratives in New Contemporary figurative art. The exhibition includes works from artists in Pop Surrealism, Street Art, Graffiti, and more.
The rebellious spirit of The New Salon can be traced back to the influence of Robert Williams, an artist who founded Juxtapoz Magazine in 1994 as an alternative art space for artists disillusioned with mainstream art movements. The exhibition features a diverse range of artists, including Robert Williams, Daniel Martin Diaz, Kumkum Fernando, Mab Graves, Kukula, Lori Nelson, Todd Shorr, Shepard Fairey, Faust, Dennis McNett, MSRA, Ben Venom, Rachel O’Donnell, and Lauren YS, who will contribute a site-specific mural.
Lauren YS, known for their mystical creatures and psychedelic style, invites viewers to explore the boundary between reality and fantasy. The exhibition provides visitors with a glimpse into the alternative art world fostered by Juxtapoz Magazine and showcases its impact on contemporary art and culture.
The New Salon exhibition will be on display at the Asheville Art Museum until August 19th. This is a fantastic opportunity for the community to immerse themselves in the world of contemporary art and celebrate creativity and rebellion against the norm.
