Foundation Awards $10,000 Scholarship to NB High School Senior

Weaverville – The SECU Foundation, a charitable organization funded by members of the State Employees’ Credit Union, has awarded a $10,000 scholarship to Kyra Sowell, a senior at North Buncombe High School. This four-year scholarship will support Sowell’s academic pursuits at UNC-Greensboro, one of the 16 universities in the University of North Carolina System.

The prestigious “People Helping People®” Scholarship is designed to recognize outstanding community involvement, leadership, character, integrity, and academic achievement. The $10,000 award will be distributed over eight consecutive semesters, covering tuition and other university-approved educational expenses. This year’s high school scholarships represent a significant $4.4 million investment in the educational futures of college-bound students across North Carolina.

SECU Foundation Executive Director Jama Campbell highlighted the longstanding commitment of the Foundation to making higher education more accessible. “For the past 19 years, the Foundation’s support of this scholarship program has made college more affordable for thousands of students pursuing quality education within the University of North Carolina System,” Campbell stated. “We hope that this award leaves a lasting impact on the lives of every recipient as they prepare for a lifetime of professional and personal fulfillment. On behalf of SECU Foundation and its members, we extend our sincere congratulations and best wishes to Kyra Sowell.”

Since its inception in 2005, the SECU Foundation’s “People Helping People®” High School Scholarship program has provided over $75 million in scholarships to North Carolina high school seniors, demonstrating a robust commitment to supporting the educational goals of students throughout the state.
