Hendersonville – As the crop reached peak season in Western North Carolina, the Hendersonville Farmers Market celebrated the humble tomato with a special event on July 27. Shoppers enjoyed a day filled with tomato-themed activities during regular market hours from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 650 Maple Street. In addition to the wide array of locally produced goods from seasonal vendors, the market featured several engaging activities centered around tomatoes.

One of the highlights was the offering of free half-sized tomato sandwiches, known as “Tomato Sammies,” which were available while supplies lasted. These sandwiches, made with classic ingredients of bread, mayonnaise, and fresh Henderson County tomatoes, were prepared by volunteers, providing a delightful experience for attendees. The bread for this year’s Sammies was generously supplied by Underground Bakery and Mini Batch Bakery.

The Kid’s Corner hosted a take-home craft inspired by tomatoes, inviting children to create their own tomato-themed masterpieces. This hands-on activity aimed to spark creativity and foster lasting memories for families at the Farmers Market.

Adding to the festivities was the Tomato Beauty Pageant, where attendees cast their votes for their favorite tomato, celebrating the star of the season. The event allowed community members to enjoy the festivities while honoring local farmers and their delicious produce.

The market also featured Terrye Tomato, the local tomato mascot, who made a cheerful appearance. This human-sized tomato strolled through the market, danced to live music, and posed for photos with shoppers, adding an extra layer of enjoyment to the day.

Approximately 40 vendors participated in Tomato Day, offering a broad selection of tomatoes, including experimental varieties that varied in color, taste, and size. In addition to tomatoes, shoppers could find locally grown produce, meat, fresh coffee, baked goods, cut flowers, plants, and artisan crafts.

Live music enlivened the atmosphere, with local acoustic group Fiddlin’ Ryn performing at the Depot and Little Ryns’ playing at the Jam Tent.

The Hendersonville Farmers Market is coordinated and managed by the City of Hendersonville’s Downtown Program and the Friends of Downtown Hendersonville, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. For more information, residents and visitors were encouraged to visit hendersonvillefarmersmarket.org.
