Asheville – Asheville Junior Theater is about to take audiences on a whimsical journey through the woods, but this time, it’s not your typical fairy tale. With a fresh approach to Stephen Sondheim’s beloved musical, “Into the Woods JR.,” the theater company is set to present a captivating experience that promises to engage both young performers and adult audiences alike.

A New Spin on a Classic

The decision to perform “Into the Woods JR.” marks a significant departure from Asheville Junior Theater’s usual productions. Traditionally, the company has staged large-scale shows featuring upwards of 50 children, complete with elaborate sets and costumes. This time, however, they are opting for a more intimate setting with just 16 talented young actors. “We wanted to focus simply on storytelling and making music, less about pomp and circumstance,” said Kelly Haas, the director and producer of the show. This reimagining aims to strip away the glitz and spectacle, allowing the heart of the story to shine through.

An Immersive Black-Box Experience

Set in a black-box theater, the production offers a unique atmosphere that differs from conventional stadium-style venues. Audiences can expect to be mere feet away from the actors, creating an immersive experience that enhances the storytelling. “People can expect to watch kids play multiple roles and see the actors on stage the entire time,” Haas explained. This innovative approach means that there is no backstage; instead, actors seamlessly transition between characters right before the audience’s eyes.

The creative team has also chosen to use unconventional items to represent key elements of the story. For instance, Cinderella’s stepfamily will arrive in an old baby pram instead of a traditional carriage, and Milky White will be portrayed by cast members wrapped in a cow-skin rug. These clever choices not only add humor but also invite the audience to engage their imaginations.

Engaging All Ages

Asheville Junior Theater prides itself on producing high-quality theater that appeals to all ages. “We may be Asheville’s premier junior theater company, but our shows are on par with regional theaters,” Haas stated. The interweaving of classic Grimm’s fairy tales provides a dynamic narrative that resonates with both young and adult audiences. The production aims to challenge traditional narratives and archetypes found in fairy tales, encouraging viewers to think critically about the stories they know so well.

Themes of Reflection and Connection

One of the central themes of “Into the Woods JR.” is the exploration of desires and consequences. The show invites audiences to reflect on their own wishes and the complexities that come with them. “We hope that people question the traditional narratives and archetypes of classical fairy tales,” Haas said. The production delves into deeper meanings and allegories, encouraging actors and audiences alike to engage with the material on a more profound level.

In light of recent challenges faced by local theater programs, Asheville Junior Theater aims to highlight the importance of live performance. “As AI threatens to take over movies and television, the need for human interaction and performing arts is real and growing,” Haas noted. The company hopes that audiences will leave with a renewed appreciation for the performing arts and a desire to support local talent.
