Hendersonville – If you’ve ever found yourself wandering through a garden, marveling at the vibrant colors and unique plants, you understand the joy that comes from connecting with nature. This September, Bullington Gardens in Hendersonville, NC, invites you to experience that joy firsthand at their annual Fall Plant Sale. Mark your calendars for September 12-14, from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and prepare to discover a treasure trove of plants that will enhance your garden while supporting a beloved local institution.

A Bounty of Unique Plants Awaits

Bullington Gardens is renowned for its impressive selection of healthy, locally grown plants. This year’s sale promises an exciting variety, including native plants, fall perennials, shrubs, trees, and cool-season annuals. Among the highlights is the striking Bear’s Breeches (Acanthus spinosus), known for its deeply lobed leaves and tall flower spikes adorned with hooded white to pinkish flowers. This architectural perennial thrives in well-drained soil and partial shade, making it a perfect addition to any garden.

Another standout is the Parrotia persica, or Ironwood tree, which boasts beautiful fall colors and is related to witch hazel. For those looking to add some flair with annuals, Bullington Gardens will also offer a limited supply of dahlias and other fall color options. “We rely on our two plant sales to fund our mission, horticultural therapy programs, and education,” said Jennifer Ramer, Administrative Assistant at Bullington Gardens.

Supporting a Local Treasure

Every purchase made during the Fall Plant Sale directly supports Bullington Gardens, a cherished non-profit botanical garden that has been a cornerstone of the Hendersonville community for 35 years. The proceeds go back into the operations of the gardens and their educational programs. “100% of our proceeds go back into the operations of the gardens and our classes,” Ramer explained. “It is through these plant sales that we are able to offer admission to the gardens at no cost to visitors.”

The impact of Bullington Gardens on the local community is significant. In 2022 alone, they hosted 54 adult classes attended by 827 adults and served over 1,100 students through various classes and field trips. Their horticultural therapy programs reached 287 students, demonstrating the garden’s commitment to promoting well-being through nature.

A Community Connection Through Education

This year’s Fall Plant Sale will also feature educational materials about Symbolic Migration, a program connecting local students with their peers in Mexico. As monarch butterflies migrate south, students send cards that are returned in spring when the butterflies come back. This initiative not only fosters creativity but also builds connections across borders.

As an added bonus, all milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) will be available for just $3 each during the sale. This native plant is crucial for monarch butterflies, making it a perfect choice for those looking to support local wildlife while beautifying their gardens.

Join the Celebration at Bullington Gardens

The Fall Plant Sale is more than just an opportunity to purchase plants; it’s a celebration of community and nature. Visitors can enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Bullington Gardens while selecting unique plants that will thrive in their own gardens. “We’re thrilled to offer our community a wonderful selection of locally grown plants to enhance their gardens this fall,” Ramer said.

The sale will take place at Bullington Gardens, located at 95 Upper Red Oak Trail, Hendersonville, NC 28792. With hours from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM daily, there’s plenty of time to explore and find the perfect additions for your garden.
