Mars Hill – If you’re looking for a vibrant celebration of local arts and culture, mark your calendars for October 5, 2024. The Madison Heritage Arts Festival is back, and this year it’s moving to a new location that promises to enhance the experience for attendees and vendors alike.

New Location, Same Spirit

The Rotary Club of Madison County has taken the reins of the Madison Heritage Arts Festival, which has been a staple in the community for over twenty-five years. Originally known as the Mars Hill Heritage Festival, the event was rebranded to reflect its broader impact on the entire county and region. Phil Reynolds, co-chair of the festival, shared that the transition to the Rotary Club was a natural fit for their community service initiatives. “We viewed the festival as a good fit among the Club’s other community service projects,” he said.

This year, the festival will take place on the scenic fields between Mars Hill Elementary School and the Dr. W. Otis Duck Memorial Greenway. With no on-site parking available, a free shuttle service will run throughout the day from the Ingles parking lot, ensuring easy access for everyone. Handicapped parking will be available on-site, making the festival accessible to all.

A Showcase of Local Talent

Attendees can look forward to an impressive lineup of over thirty regional vendors showcasing their arts and crafts. From handmade jewelry to unique home décor, there’s something for everyone. Food trucks will also be on hand, offering a variety of delicious options to fuel your day of exploration.

The festival is presented alongside the Bascom Lamar Lunsford Mountain Music Festival, which has been celebrating regional musicians since 1968. This partnership enriches the experience by providing live music performances that highlight the area’s rich cultural heritage. “The Madison Heritage Arts Festival is a story of resilience,” Reynolds noted, reflecting on how the event has adapted over the years, especially during the challenges posed by COVID-19.

Resilience Through Change

The festival faced significant hurdles in recent years, including a hiatus during the pandemic and uncertainty regarding its location due to construction plans at Mars Hill University. However, after successfully hosting events in 2022 and 2023 on College Street, the festival is now set to embrace its new home in 2024. “After assessing several alternative sites, we found that relocating to the sports field adjacent to Mars Hill Elementary School was the best option,” Reynolds explained.

This evolution not only demonstrates the festival’s adaptability but also its commitment to supporting local artisans. Historically, the Madison Heritage Arts Festival has provided a platform for over 40 artisans to showcase their work, fostering a sense of community and collaboration among creatives. “Many are longstanding vendors who appreciate the value of their presence at MHAF,” Reynolds said.

Supporting Community Programs

Beyond celebrating local arts, the festival plays a crucial role in supporting various community programs through its proceeds. Funds raised from vendor registrations and sponsorships will benefit initiatives such as scholarships for youth attending the Rotary Youth Leadership Academy, distribution of dictionaries to third graders, and maintenance of the Marshall Native Gardens at the Marshall Library. Additionally, ongoing efforts at Gabriel’s Creek will focus on removing invasive species and planting native trees.

The festival not only highlights artistic talent but also reinforces the Rotary Club’s mission to improve lives in Madison County. “We’re proud to serve our local community,” Reynolds stated, emphasizing the club’s dedication to empowering youth and promoting education.
