Asheville – In the aftermath of a devastating storm that has wreaked havoc across Buncombe County and well beyond, Trinity Baptist Church is stepping up to provide essential support through its newly established Trinity Task Force. This initiative, established by the Senior Pastor, Winston Parrish, combines the resources of Trinity Baptist Church and Ralph Sexton Ministries, along with outreach from churches nationwide, to deliver critical assistance to those affected by the disaster.
The storm has left many residents grappling with severe flooding and landslides, resulting in trapped individuals and tragic loss of life. In response to this crisis, Buncombe County emergency services reached out to Winston Parirsh (senior pastor) of Trinity Baptist Church, asking for a new system to aid those in need. The Trinity Task Force is now housing over 120 rescue divers and search and rescue teams, offering them shelter and meals to sustain their efforts.
“We’re honored to host these brave men and women who are working tirelessly to help our community,” said Ralph Sexton. “Our mission is clear: to support those on the front lines of this disaster response.”
A Community United in Action
The task force is located in west Asheville on the 23-acre site of Trinity Baptist Church, and has welcomed teams from various states, including Chicago, Florida, Louisiana, and Virginia. These teams are utilizing the church’s facilities as a base of operations, with the auditorium transformed into a dormitory and Sunday school rooms serving as temporary housing for fire teams. Each morning, these teams disperse throughout Buncombe County and surrounding areas, including Spruce Pine and Barnardsville, to assist those in need.
As these teams head out, the church’s kitchen crew prepares hearty meals to send to local fire stations that may have lost their kitchens or supplies due to the storm. “We want to ensure that our first responders are well-fed and energized for their demanding work,” Sexton explained. “High-energy meals are essential for them as they face challenging conditions. Due to water outtages in our area, we had to dig a 280 foot well, to access spring water, which has helped meet the constant demands.”
Helicopter Support and Supply Distribution
In addition to providing shelter and meals, the Trinity Task Force has established a helicopter landing zone approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). This strategic move allows for rapid delivery of supplies to hard-to-reach areas. Helicopters have been deployed to drop essential items like water, chainsaw fuel, and other supplies directly to those in need.
The church has also been proactive in resupplying local distribution centers. Volunteers are working diligently to ensure that fire departments and community centers have access to necessary supplies. Residents can reach out to the church directly for assistance by calling 828-254-2187.
Grassroots Support from Local Churches
A remarkable aspect of this relief effort is the overwhelming support from local churches and congregations. “Every drop of water, every can of food, every meal has come from churches across North Carolina and beyond,” Sexton shared. “It’s been an amazing outpouring of love and humanity.”
Churches with as few as 30 members have rallied together to collect supplies, demonstrating the strength of community spirit in times of need. “When you see people coming together like this, it reaffirms your faith in humanity,” he added.
Sexton emphasized that this initiative is not about building a kingdom but rather about helping people in their time of need. “We already have a church here; we don’t need to hire anyone. Our volunteers are dedicated and ready to serve,” he said.
A Call for Continued Support
As recovery efforts continue, Trinity Baptist Church encourages community members to remain engaged and supportive. “Hearts with Hands is still operating and has fed thousands in Swannanoa,” Sexton stated. “We’re picking up a new assignment now that we’ve never had before—housing hundreds of people who are digging through the rubble for their loved ones.”
The Trinity Task Force represents a collaborative effort among local churches, emergency services, and volunteers dedicated to restoring hope in the community. “We believe that together we can make a difference,” Sexton said.
For those looking to contribute or seek assistance, Trinity Baptist Church remains a central hub for disaster relief efforts. The church is committed to providing ongoing support as Buncombe County navigates this challenging time.
