Asheville – In a decisive move, the Asheville City Council has allocated resources to provide much-needed relief for residents and businesses impacted by Tropical Storm Helene. The council’s commitment includes over $4 million in grants aimed at business stabilization, rental assistance, and home repairs.
During a recent Agenda Briefing session, the council outlined the distribution of these funds through experienced nonprofit partners. Mountain BizWorks will manage $704,000 in Business Stabilization funds, offering grants up to $25,000 for eligible businesses within city limits that employ fewer than 200 full-time workers. Priority will be given to those in low to moderate-income neighborhoods and those employing low to moderate-income individuals.
Eblen Charities is set to distribute $500,000 in Rental Assistance funds, targeting households earning up to 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI), with a focus on those earning below 60% AMI. The program aims to ensure equitable access for all residents, including those who may face barriers due to disabilities or storm-related losses.
Additionally, the Asheville Regional Coalition for Home Repair will oversee $750,000 in Home Repair funds, also prioritizing households earning below 60% AMI.
Nikki Reid, Director of Community and Economic Development, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “We recognize that time is of the essence and that community members will be eager to find more information on how to apply for these grants.”
Further details on application processes will be announced soon. For ongoing updates regarding the city’s response to Tropical Storm Helene, visit Asheville’s official website https://www.ashevillenc.gov/helene/.
