Haire expressed his gratitude for the support he has received from the community over the years. “It is once again an honor to bring this classic story to life,” he said. “I am grateful to the good people of St John in the Wilderness and the greater Flat Rock community and beyond who have supported my efforts.”

The Heart of Capote’s Story

Set during the Great Depression, *A Christmas Memory* is an autobiographical account of Capote’s childhood in rural Alabama, focusing on his relationship with his elderly cousin, Miss Sook Faulk. The story beautifully encapsulates themes of love, memory, and the simple joys of life. Haire connects deeply with these themes, drawing inspiration from his own grandmothers. “The story reminds me of elements and qualities that my own grandmothers possessed,” he shared. “Their unconditional love and the feelings that I was safe and loved unconditionally when I stayed with them help me identify with the boy in the story.”

Capote’s writing shines through in this timeless tale, which first appeared in *Mademoiselle Magazine* in the late 1950s. Haire believes that its universal themes resonate with audiences today. “I think the story is timeless and for many, nostalgic,” he said. “Capote truly wrote a classic.”

A Unique Blend of Acting and Theology

Haire’s background in theology adds a unique layer to his interpretation of *A Christmas Memory*. He admires the simple faith embodied by Sook, who represents a childlike belief in goodness and love. “Sook has the faith of a child and she embodies that faith not by deep contemplation but by simply doing what she can do,” he explained. This perspective allows Haire to convey the story’s deeper meanings while keeping it accessible and relatable.

The community of Flat Rock plays an essential role in enhancing the performance experience. Haire appreciates the support he receives from local residents and visitors alike. “The people of Flat Rock are amazing; they have been so supportive,” he said. “I tell everyone it’s not me; the story is so perfectly written, even I can’t screw it up.”

As Haire prepares for this year’s performances, he reflects on the joy of sharing Capote’s work with others. “I guess I tell this story as my Christmas present to the community, and they are gracious in receiving it,” he said.

With its rich storytelling and heartfelt themes, *A Christmas Memory* promises to be a memorable experience for all who attend. Don’t miss your chance to witness E.R. Haire Jr.’s captivating performance this holiday season at St. John in the Wilderness Church in Flat Rock.
