Hendersonville – The City of Hendersonville is basking in the glow of recognition after receiving multiple accolades from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) Mobi Awards for the Oklawaha Greenway. This project has been celebrated for its significant contributions to multimodal transportation and community connectivity, showcasing the city’s commitment to creating vibrant outdoor spaces.
“We are thrilled to see the Oklawaha Greenway recognized as a model of multimodal infrastructure,” said Brent Detwiler, Public Services Director for the City of Hendersonville. “This greenway project demonstrates what’s possible when a community comes together to prioritize safe and sustainable pathways that enhance quality of life for our residents and visitors,” he added.
City Engineer Brendan Shanahan accepted the awards during the November 7 City Council meeting, alongside key project partners who played vital roles in the greenway’s success. Hendersonville earned First Place in both the Small Urban Category and the Most Voted Project category, along with a Second Place finish in the Innovation Category.
Despite being unable to attend the Mobi Awards luncheon on October 11 due to Hurricane Helene recovery efforts, the recognition highlights Hendersonville’s dedication to innovative transportation solutions. The Oklawaha Greenway, completed in July 2019, expanded by 1.5 miles, connecting four parks and enhancing the area’s active transportation system.
The NCDOT Mobi Awards celebrate communities that implement multimodal projects that drive economic growth and improve public health. Hendersonville’s achievement stands out, particularly in the “Most Voted Project” category, where it surpassed larger communities, reflecting strong local support.
