Asheville – Following the significant damage caused by Hurricane Helene a few weeks ago, Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity is taking proactive steps to support low-income homeowners in Buncombe and Madison Counties. The organization has launched the Disaster Repairs program to aid those who are uninsured or under-insured and facing difficulties due to storm-related damage.
Addressing the Aftermath of Hurricane Helene
The hurricane’s impact has led to a marked increase in the need for home repairs, especially among the region’s most vulnerable residents. In response, Asheville Habitat has broadened its Home Repair services to address disaster-related issues such as flooding, roof damage, and fallen trees. This effort is part of a coordinated initiative with other organizations through the Asheville Region Coalition for Home Repair (ARCHR).
Joel Johnson, Home Repair Director at Asheville Habitat, highlighted the program’s significance. “We are collaborating with various repair-focused organizations through the ARCHR Collaboration to assist homes in our community affected by Hurricane Helene,” he stated. The program primarily targets low-income homeowners who are unable to afford essential repairs.
Eligibility and Application Process
Homeowners impacted by storm damage can seek assistance by applying through Asheville Habitat’s website. The program is designed for those whose household income is below 70% of the area median income (AMI), based on household size. Applicants must reside in Buncombe or Madison County, and the damage must be directly linked to the storm.
Eligible applicants will receive a damage assessment for their homes, and necessary repairs will be completed at no cost. Johnson mentioned that all repair work will be carried out by ARCHR organizations and qualified subcontractors under formal agreements.
