Mills River – In a heartwarming response to Hurricane Helene’s aftermath, Naventure has partnered with the U.S. Forest Service to launch the Helene Extended Stay Program, providing a much-needed refuge for those affected by the storm. This initiative allows individuals and recovery teams to stay longer at select campgrounds in Pisgah National Forest, offering both comfort and community support during a challenging time. Naventure provides comprehensive visitor management services to the U.S. Forest Service, overseeing operations of campgrounds and recreation areas in the Pisgah National Forest including Davidson River, Lake Powhatan, North Mills River, and others.
Extended Stay Program Details
The Helene Extended Stay Program is available at three picturesque campgrounds: Davidson River, Lake Powhatan, and North Mills River. Running from October 28, 2024, to February 28, 2025, the program temporarily waives the standard 14-day camping limit, allowing guests to enjoy an extended stay amidst the natural beauty of the forest.
Daily rates are set at $35 for standard sites, $43 for electric sites, and $49 for full hookup sites. Participants will have access to essential amenities such as potable water, showers, and flush toilets, ensuring a comfortable experience while they focus on recovery efforts. Reservations can be made online at Naventure’s website.
Commitment to Sustainability
Cindy Pearce, General Manager of Naventure, emphasized the importance of environmental stewardship within the program. “All individuals that participate in the Extended Stay program will be asked to follow the standard rules and guidelines as any other guest would,” she said. Participants will be assigned specific campsites and are required to keep their belongings within designated areas to minimize environmental impact. This approach aims to create harmony between visitors and the natural surroundings.
Collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service
The partnership with the U.S. Forest Service has been instrumental in launching this program. Pearce noted that there were no significant challenges in coordinating efforts, thanks to a strong collaboration that focused on serving the public’s best interests. “This program is a result of our partnership with the USFS and responding to the needs of the community,” she explained.
Supporting Those Affected by Hurricane Helene
While the program is designed for individuals impacted by Hurricane Helene and those involved in recovery efforts, site reservations will be made on a first-come, first-served basis. Pearce clarified that while the program aims to assist those most affected, it does not prioritize one group over another.
Looking Ahead
As for measuring success, Pearce stated that even helping one person affected by the hurricane would mark a victory for the program. While there are no current plans for similar initiatives beyond February 2025, she acknowledged that future needs may arise. “Naventure is here to ensure a safe and welcoming camping experience for everyone,” she said.
The Helene Extended Stay Program not only provides essential support for those recovering from Hurricane Helene but also reinforces Naventure’s commitment to responsible outdoor recreation and community engagement.
