Western North Carolina – The SECU Foundation is stepping up its support for communities affected by Hurricane Helene with a new disaster relief package totaling $1.75 million. This initiative aims to provide essential assistance to residents facing temporary housing challenges, financial hardships, and food insecurity.
The funding will be distributed among three key organizations. Baptists on Mission will receive a $1 million grant to bolster its Essential Rapid Repairs program, which focuses on immediate home repairs for those in need. The Salvation Army of the Carolinas is set to receive $500,000 to enhance its capacity to deliver financial aid to families striving to recover. Additionally, MANNA Food Bank will benefit from a $250,000 grant for a six-month pilot program aimed at distributing fresh produce to affected communities starting in December 2024.
This phase two funding builds on the Foundation’s earlier commitment of $3.75 million announced in October, which was directed toward providing water, food, supplies, and shelter to those impacted by the hurricane.
SECU Foundation Board Chair Chris Ayers expressed his gratitude for the additional support, stating, “As a native of Western North Carolina, I know many continue to struggle with recovering from Hurricane Helene. Through these grants, we are living out our philosophy of People Helping People® by helping to lift those in need.”
Executive Director Jama Campbell echoed this sentiment, highlighting the ongoing devastation in the region. “The organizations receiving funding provide critical resources and serve as lifelines for North Carolinians,” she said.
The SECU Foundation remains committed to aiding its fellow North Carolinians as they navigate the recovery process from this disaster.
