Asheville – When disaster strikes, the community often rallies together in remarkable ways. In the wake of Hurricane Helene, Western Carolina Rescue Ministries (WCRM) has stepped up to provide a vital lifeline for those affected by the storm. On November 10th, WCRM took over the Gold’s Gym Emergency Shelter, transforming it into The Refuge, a temporary haven for individuals and families in need.

A Collaborative Effort to Address Urgent Needs

The Refuge is not just a roof over heads; it’s a comprehensive response to a pressing crisis. WCRM is collaborating with the Red Cross, FEMA, and local health organizations to ensure that guests receive essential services. Nicole LaVoie, a grant writer at WCRM, emphasized the urgency of the situation: “If we did not step up, there was no apparent backup option.” With many nonprofits already stretched thin, WCRM recognized its unique capacity to provide immediate support.

The shelter will operate for eight weeks, offering not only a place to stay but also critical services such as mental health counseling, medical care, and employment assistance. “We have partnered with several community entities to best understand our guests and how to move them forward,” LaVoie explained. This collaborative approach aims to address both immediate and long-term needs, ensuring that individuals can begin to rebuild their lives.

Fostering Hope and Healing Amidst Crisis

The impact of Hurricane Helene has been profound, affecting families in various ways. For many guests at The Refuge, the experience has highlighted the importance of community and connection. “Regardless of their experience, everyone has seen a need for community,” LaVoie noted. The shelter provides a space for individuals to share their stories, mourn losses, and celebrate resilience together.

WCRM’s commitment goes beyond providing shelter; it’s about fostering hope and healing. The organization employs a Licensed Clinical Social Worker who collaborates with various service providers to ensure that guests have access to resources for long-term placement and recovery. This holistic approach is designed to empower individuals as they navigate the challenges ahead.

Join the Effort to Support Local Families

As WCRM continues its mission to serve those in need, they invite community members to get involved. Volunteer opportunities are available for those looking to make a difference during this critical time. As WCRM works tirelessly to provide shelter and support, they remind us all of the importance of coming together in the face of adversity.
