Hendersonville – Graduation ceremonies often evoke a sense of accomplishment, but the recent event at Blue Ridge Community College was particularly poignant. On December 16, 2024, 48 graduates from the Adult High School (AHS) and High School Equivalency (HSE) programs gathered in the Thomas Auditorium, marking a significant milestone in their educational journeys.
Empowering Education for All
The AHS program is designed to help students complete their high school diplomas, equipping them for further education and the workforce. With a web-based platform that offers instructor support, students can learn at their own pace. Meanwhile, the HSE program prepares individuals to earn a North Carolina Community College High School Equivalency Diploma by passing the ETS HiSET or Pearson VUE GED tests. Subjects such as reading, writing, math, social studies, and science are covered, ensuring a well-rounded education.
Blue Ridge President Dr. Laura B. Leatherwood opened the ceremony with an inspiring welcome. She acknowledged the challenges faced by the graduates, particularly in the wake of recent hurricanes. “In the aftermath of the hurricane, we now see not just the physical rebuilding of homes and communities, but also the rebuilding of hope and opportunity,” she said. “You are a shining example of that hope, proving that no storm can extinguish your ambition and the power of education.”
Voices of Achievement
The ceremony featured remarks from HSE graduate Sarah Pipkin, who shared her personal journey and the significance of her achievement. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Katherine R. B. Greysen, a retired communication studies professor from Haywood Community College, who emphasized the importance of perseverance in education.
Blue Ridge Dean of Adult Education and Literacy Robin Paulison presented the graduates, while diplomas were conferred by Dr. Leatherwood. The event concluded with closing remarks from Vice President for Instruction Kathy Allen, followed by enthusiastic applause as graduates celebrated with their friends and families.
A Bright Future Ahead
The list of graduates reflects a diverse group of individuals who have taken significant steps toward their futures. From Aundreah Alexis Blackman to Joseph Zander, each name represents a story of determination and resilience.
