New Leadership at Claxton Elementary: Corey Simons Takes the Helm

Asheville – Asheville City Schools is making waves with the appointment of Corey Simons as the new principal of Claxton Elementary School. With over 17 years of experience in education, Simons is set to bring a fresh perspective and a wealth of knowledge to the role.

A Warm Welcome from the Superintendent

Dr. Maggie Fehrman, Superintendent of Asheville City Schools, expressed her enthusiasm for Simons’ arrival. “We are excited to welcome Corey Simons to the Claxton Elementary CREW,” she said. “Corey is a dedicated educator with a proven track record of success in creating positive and inclusive learning environments.” Dr. Fehrman highlighted Simons’ passion for student growth and collaborative leadership style as key assets for the Claxton community.

A Proven Track Record in Education

Before joining Claxton Elementary, Simons honed his skills as a middle school teacher in Gwinnett County Public Schools. He later served as Assistant Principal in Savannah County Public Schools, where he demonstrated strategic leadership and a commitment to school improvement. His experience includes fostering a positive school climate and implementing innovative educational practices, particularly in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Math) and data-driven instructional leadership.

Simons holds a Master’s of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Lesley University and an Education Specialist Degree from Thomas University. He is also a Licensed North Carolina Principal with a coaching endorsement, further solidifying his qualifications for this pivotal role.

“I am truly honored and excited to join Asheville City Schools and Claxton Elementary as the new principal,” Simons said. He emphasized the district’s commitment to excellence, diversity, and equity, which resonates deeply with his own values. “Claxton’s remarkable 100-year legacy offers a solid foundation to build upon,” he added. Simons will officially step into his role as principal on January 3, 2025, marking a new chapter for Claxton Elementary School. The community eagerly anticipates the positive changes and growth that his leadership will bring.
