Asheville – The Asheville Ballet’s Nutcracker is back, and this year, it’s not just a performance; it’s a testament to resilience and community spirit. After facing significant challenges due to the devastating effects of Hurricane Helene, the ballet company is ready to charm audiences once again with Clara’s enchanting journey to the Land of Sweets.

A Community Rebuilds Together
The impact of the hurricane was severe, leaving the Asheville Ballet’s studio in ruins. “I would not be having a Nutcracker if it weren’t for community support and the GoFundMe,” said Ann Dunn, the Artistic Director. The $50,000 suspended wood floor was destroyed, along with many props and sets. Yet, the community rallied together, offering rehearsal spaces and volunteer support. “It has been incredible,” Dunn noted, highlighting the collaborative effort that has made this production possible.

With over 100 dancers auditioning for roles, the cast has grown to 106 performers taking on more than 200 roles. The first run-through of the show is a significant milestone for everyone involved, marking a cathartic moment after months of hard work and dedication.
New Choreography Enhances the Classic Tale
This year’s production features fresh choreography that adds contemporary elements to the traditional story. A new scene at the beginning of the ballet introduces Drosselmeyer in his workshop, setting the stage for Clara’s magical adventure. And at the end of the ballet, “We have emphasized the lyrical, romantic elements of the grand pas de deux between the Cavalier and the Sugar Plum Fairy,” Dunn explained. This narrative approach aims to engage both seasoned ballet fans and newcomers alike, making the story accessible and relatable.
The return of Marcelo Martinez as the Cavalier adds an extra layer of excitement. His partnership with Megan Jones Medford’s Sugar Plum Fairy promises to deliver a captivating performance that audiences won’t soon forget.
A Magical Experience for All Ages
The Nutcracker is not just a ballet; it’s an experience that resonates deeply with audiences of all ages. Dunn expressed her enthusiasm for this year’s children’s show, noting that many young attendees have faced hardships due to the hurricane. “To be able to go to the theater will be a really special experience for them,” she said. The production offers a chance for everyone to escape their realities and immerse themselves in a world of magic and beauty.
Asheville Ballet has been a cornerstone of the local arts scene since 1963, impacting approximately 23,000 people each season through performances and educational outreach. With a commitment to nurturing talent and promoting dance appreciation, the company continues to thrive despite challenges.
In a year marked by adversity, the Asheville Ballet’s Nutcracker stands as a shining example of community resilience and artistic dedication.
