Hendersonville – Hendersonville Fire Department Honors Outstanding Members
The Hendersonville Fire Department recently celebrated the remarkable achievements of two of its dedicated members during an awards ceremony that underscored their commitment to the community. Firefighter John Perez was awarded the Firefighter of the Year, while Battalion Chief Dustin Nicholson received the Officer of the Year accolade.
These awards are more than just formalities; they symbolize the strong values and camaraderie within the department. “These awards hold a deep significance because they are decided by our team,” said Hendersonville Fire Chief D. James Miller. “To be recognized by the very people who work alongside you is a powerful testament to camaraderie and excellence.”

Firefighter of the Year: John Perez’s Journey
Firefighter John Perez joined the Hendersonville Fire Department in January 2024, bringing extensive experience from his previous roles with the Henderson County Rescue Squad and Fletcher Fire Department. His skills encompass swift water rescue, high-angle technical rescue, dive rescue and recovery, search and rescue, and Winter Alpine Search and Rescue (WASAR).
In addition to his technical expertise, Engineer Perez has significantly contributed to the department’s Peer Support Team, a role he embraced at his colleagues’ request. His commitment to professional growth is evident as he completed his probationary training in just six months and quickly earned a promotion to Engineer. Outside of work, he volunteers at Camp Promise for youth with neuromuscular disorders and supports the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
Officer of the Year: Battalion Chief Dustin Nicholson’s Leadership
Battalion Chief Dustin Nicholson has been a vital part of the Hendersonville Fire Department since 2008, following a decade at the Hendersonville Water and Sewer Department. He has risen through the ranks to his current position, holding an associate degree in Fire Science and completing the UNC Charlotte Fire and Rescue Management Institute certificate program.
Chief Nicholson oversees fire hydrant maintenance and coordinates apparatus repairs while actively participating in several committees. He also serves as Fire Chief of the Green River Fire & Rescue Department, demonstrating his unwavering dedication to public safety.
The recognition of Firefighter Perez and Battalion Chief Nicholson not only honors their individual accomplishments but also reflects the values that define the Hendersonville Fire Department. Their names will be inscribed on plaques at Fire Station 2, serving as a lasting reminder of their contributions. Congratulations to both for their exceptional service!
