Asheville – The world is mourning the loss of former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, a man whose commitment to affordable housing and social justice has left an indelible mark on countless lives. Carter passed away peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia, surrounded by family on December 29. His legacy, particularly through Habitat for Humanity, showcases a life dedicated to uplifting others and advocating for basic human rights.

Carter’s Lifelong Commitment to Housing

Carter’s journey with Habitat for Humanity began in 1984, shortly after he left the White House. He and his wife, Rosalynn, volunteered in Americus, Georgia, and soon expanded their efforts to New York City’s Lower East Side, where they renovated an abandoned building for families in need. This marked the inception of what would become the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project, an initiative that has inspired thousands to join the cause of affordable housing.

Jonathan Reckford, CEO of Habitat for Humanity International, expressed profound sadness over Carter’s passing. “President and Mrs. Carter began volunteering with Habitat for Humanity near their home in southwest Georgia more than 40 years ago,” he said. “We are grateful for the incredible impact the Carters have had on Habitat and on the families who have benefited from their shining example.”

Over the years, the Carters participated in numerous projects, working side by side with homeowners to build or improve homes across the United States and around the globe. Their dedication not only brought attention to the need for decent housing but also inspired over 108,000 volunteers to contribute to Habitat’s mission.

A Personal Connection to Service

Andy Barnett, CEO of Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity, shared his reflections on Carter’s influence. “Together with the world, the staff, supporters, and homeowners of Asheville Area Habitat for Humanity remember President Carter’s life and grieve his death,” he said. “When they learn I work for Habitat, people of all backgrounds say, ‘Jimmy Carter is a great man.’”

Barnett had the unique opportunity to work alongside the Carters during various projects and events. He described Carter as genuine and kind, someone who truly loved people. “He lived with an integrity that gave him a moral authority that called people together and made you want to build a better future,” Barnett noted. This sentiment resonates with many who have been touched by Carter’s work and character.

The Impact of the Carter Work Project

The Jimmy Carter Work Project has had a significant impact over the last three decades. It has led to the construction and renovation of 4,447 Habitat homes in 14 countries. Since its founding in 1976, Habitat for Humanity has served more than 62 million people worldwide. The Carters’ involvement has been pivotal in raising awareness about housing issues and mobilizing communities to take action.

In recognition of their extraordinary dedication, Habitat named President and Mrs. Carter as the inaugural Habitat Humanitarians in 2016. This honor reflects their unwavering commitment to service and aligns with Habitat’s vision of a world where everyone has a decent place to live.

Carter once said, “I think every human being has within himself or herself a desire to reach out to others and to share some of our blessings with those who are in need.” This philosophy guided his work with Habitat and continues to inspire individuals and organizations dedicated to social justice.

A Lasting Legacy

As Habitat for Humanity prepares to celebrate President Carter’s life of service, local observances will be held to honor his memory. The organization encourages those who wish to pay tribute to visit habitat.org for more information.

Carter’s legacy is not just about the homes built or families served; it is about the spirit of compassion and community he fostered through his actions. His life serves as a reminder that each of us has the power to make a difference in the lives of others.

In reflecting on Carter’s impact, Barnett emphasized the importance of continuing his work. “We will miss that now that he is gone,” he said. The challenge now lies in carrying forward the values he embodied—integrity, kindness, and a commitment to serving those in need.

Habitat for Humanity remains dedicated to its mission of providing affordable housing solutions while honoring the legacy of its most prominent advocate. Through shelter, we empower individuals and families to build better lives for themselves.

As we remember Jimmy Carter, we celebrate a life well-lived—a life dedicated to service, compassion, and humanity. His contributions will continue to inspire generations to come as we strive for a world where everyone has a decent place to live.
