Raleigh – In a heartfelt ceremony, Attorney General Josh Stein recognized four outstanding individuals from eastern North Carolina with the prestigious Dogwood Award, honoring their commitment to enhancing the health, safety, and well-being of their communities. This annual recognition shines a light on those who go above and beyond in their service to others.
Honoring District Attorney Ernie Lee
Among the recipients was District Attorney Ernie Lee, who has taken a proactive stance against the fentanyl crisis plaguing the state. “The fentanyl crisis in our state is devastating our communities,” Stein remarked. Lee has played a pivotal role in shaping state policy and holding accountable those who distribute this dangerous substance.
Expressing gratitude for the recognition, Lee said, “I am very appreciative to receive the Dogwood Award from Governor-elect Josh Stein but I’m even more appreciative of his strong and unwavering stand as Attorney General in addressing the opioid epidemic facing our state.” His dedication as a career prosecutor has made a significant impact in Duplin, Jones, Onslow, and Sampson counties.
Recognizing District Attorney Scott Thomas
Another honoree, District Attorney Scott Thomas, has been instrumental in safeguarding the communities of Carteret, Craven, and Pamlico counties. Stein praised Thomas for his hard work and collaboration with the Attorney General’s office to create a safer environment for residents.
A Tribute to Congressman GK Butterfield
Stein also honored Congressman GK Butterfield for his long-standing service to North Carolina. “Congressman GK Butterfield has been a friend and mentor to me for many years,” he said. Butterfield represented North Carolina’s first congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2004 to 2022, leaving a lasting legacy of public service.
Detective Brandon Peebles: A Community Champion
Detective Brandon Peebles was recognized not only for his role in law enforcement but also for his contributions as a youth coach. “Folks like Detective Peebles are the glue that keep our communities together and strong,” Stein noted. Peebles emphasized the importance of his work, stating, “Although the nomination for the Dogwood Award is a tremendous honor, the real honor comes from being able to make our state a safer place and give closure to victims of violent crimes.”
Peebles serves with the Greenville Police Department and recently coached the Pitt County team that won the 2024 Little League Softball World Series championship. He took a moment to acknowledge the sacrifices made by law enforcement officers and their families, underscoring the importance of community support.
The Dogwood Awards serve as a reminder of the dedication and resilience found within local communities. As these four individuals continue their vital work, they inspire others to contribute positively to society, reinforcing the notion that collective efforts can lead to meaningful change.
