Asheville – Asheville Regional Airport (AVL) has achieved a remarkable milestone, welcoming over 2 million passengers for the second consecutive year. In 2024, the airport recorded 2,174,125 travelers, despite a slight 3% decline attributed to storm-related disruptions. This achievement underscores AVL’s growing significance as a key transportation hub in western North Carolina, bolstered by expanded airline services and strong community support.

Historic Growth Amid Challenges

The airport’s impressive performance follows a staggering 22.2% increase in passenger numbers in 2023, marking the first time it surpassed the 2 million mark. The modest decrease in 2024 is largely due to the impacts of Storm Helene, which affected travel patterns. Lew Bleiweis, President and CEO of AVL, acknowledged the challenges posed by the storm but emphasized the resilience of the airport and its community. “To surpass the 2 million passenger mark for two years in a row is a testament to our community,” he stated.

The first three quarters of 2024 showed promising trends, with passenger numbers exceeding projections based on the previous year’s data. The region’s appeal as a travel destination remains strong, with local residents consistently choosing to fly from their regional airport. Airlines have responded by increasing flight frequencies, upgrading to larger aircraft, and introducing new nonstop routes, including a direct connection to Orlando International Airport (MCO). Bleiweis expressed gratitude to airline partners for their continued investment in the region and to residents for their loyalty to AVL.

Future Developments and Economic Impact

Construction on AVL Forward is progressing smoothly, with Phase One focusing on a new north concourse set to open in summer 2025. Bleiweis highlighted the importance of this expansion, stating, “Over two million passengers, two years in a row, demonstrates how much this region needs an airport that can provide world-class service in a larger space.” The new concourse aims to accommodate the airport’s historic growth and enhance the travel experience for passengers.

The North Carolina Division of Aviation recently released its biennial economic impact report, revealing that Asheville Regional Airport supports 22,745 jobs and generates over $1 billion in personal income for the region. The total economic impact of AVL is estimated at $3.9 billion, showcasing its vital role in the local economy. The report emphasizes contributions from leisure and business travelers, airport tenants, and general aviation activities.

As AVL continues to thrive as the third-busiest commercial service airport in North Carolina, it is served by five airline partners: Allegiant, American, Delta, JetBlue, and United. These airlines offer nonstop service to 27 unique destinations across the country, further solidifying AVL’s position as a key player in regional air travel.

The future looks bright for Asheville Regional Airport as it navigates challenges and embraces opportunities for growth. With ongoing construction projects and strong community support, AVL is poised to enhance its services and continue serving as a vital gateway for travelers in western North Carolina.
