Asheville – Asheville City Schools has announced the appointment of Carrie Buchanan as the new Executive Director of Learning Pathways at the William Randolph Campus. This decision comes following the departure of Dr. Darwin Carter, and it marks a significant transition for the school community. With 26 years of experience in education, Buchanan is well-equipped to lead the campus into a new era focused on student success and community engagement.

Leadership Experience and Vision for Education

Buchanan’s extensive background includes her recent role as principal at Hall Fletcher Elementary School, where she successfully implemented initiatives aimed at enhancing student achievement and fostering teacher development. Her leadership style emphasizes collaboration and innovation, which will be crucial as she takes on her new responsibilities. In her position, she will oversee all educational programming at the William Randolph Campus, reporting directly to Superintendent Dr. Maggie Fehrman.

Buchanan’s goals for her tenure include improving student achievement, designing innovative learning pathways, and developing partnerships with local businesses to create internship and mentorship opportunities. She also aims to strengthen community engagement and expand programming to include adult learning opportunities. These objectives reflect a commitment to not only academic excellence but also to preparing students for life beyond school.

Community Engagement and Future Initiatives

Dr. Maggie Fehrman expressed enthusiasm about Buchanan’s appointment, highlighting her strong community ties and proven track record in educational leadership. “Her deep relationships in our community along with her proven experience as a building leader, passion for education, and commitment to student success make her the ideal candidate to lead the campus into its next chapter,” Fehrman stated.

Buchanan’s educational credentials are impressive; she holds a BA in Early Childhood/Elementary Education from North Greenville University, an MS Ed. in Reading and Literacy from Walden University, and a Graduate Certificate in School Leadership from Appalachian State University. Her previous roles have equipped her with a comprehensive understanding of both classroom dynamics and administrative responsibilities.

In addition to her leadership experience, Buchanan has been recognized for her contributions to education, including being named Asheville City Schools 2025 Principal of the Year and receiving National Board Certification in 2008. Her active involvement in professional organizations further demonstrates her commitment to continuous improvement in education.

Buchanan expressed her excitement about joining the William Randolph Campus, stating, “I am committed to building on the campus’s strong foundation and creating a vibrant and inclusive community where every student thrives and feels a strong sense of belonging.”

As she steps into this new role on February 17, Shawn Benfield will serve as the interim principal at Hall Fletcher Elementary School. Benfield brings 28 years of classroom experience and over three years in administration, ensuring a smooth transition during this period of change.

The appointment of Carrie Buchanan signals a renewed focus on educational excellence and community collaboration at the William Randolph Campus. With her leadership, the school is poised to enhance its programs and better serve its students and families.
