Super snow storm Elliott has effectively forced everyone to take refuge in their homes. With a Severe Wind & Wind Chill Advisory in effect till later this afternoon, we ask please stay safe and inside. Keep your pups and kittens from getting out of the house. It’s brutal out there. Christmas holidays have a reputation for being chaotic. As we sit back and watch Mother Nature do her feats, take this moment of pause and reflect on another great year out here in the Smokey Mountains.

Local Business Briefs

TACO BOY is coming to town!!

  • According to a news release, Lassonde Industries Inc., a well-known manufacturer of fruit juices and beverages, has confirmed the expansion of its Mountain Home Industrial Park location. A new facility as well as the inclusion of a new production line are also part of the $55 million project. The company presently has 135 employees, and it plans to hire 30 more permanent workers, whose average salaries will be higher than those in the county, according to the statement.
  • In order to monitor for floods that could threaten to close roadways after heavy rain, the City of Hendersonville has put four solar-powered sensors at bridges throughout the city. Stormwater Division Manager Michael Huffman explained to City Council at its regularly scheduled meeting on December 1 that prior to the system, which uses radar to detect water level, Stormwater Management staff relied on weather forecasts or in-person observations to determine when roads were flooded. According to him, this resulted in the city officials communicating with the public slowly and inefficiently, closing off roads either too early or too late.
  • The new branding was unveiled by Shawn Terpack of Arnett Muldrow & Associates. It was inspired locally by the Historic Railroad Depot, current branding, the Green Meadows neighborhood, and even old high school yearbooks, and it also borrowed a little from Brooklyn, New York, which once shared the same name as the current Green Meadows neighborhood. Arnett Muldrow produced a narrative of the district in addition to logos, signs, and marketing materials. This narrative was influenced by discussions with the project’s Steering Committee, which was made up of Seventh Avenue business owners, property owners, and residents of the Green Meadows neighborhood, the Downtown Advisory Board and its subcommittee, the Community Character Board, and the public input from over 40 stakeholders in August.
  • Soon, Asheville diners won’t need to leave the mountains to go to a popular coastal Carolina restaurant. On December 20, Taco Boy will open its fourth store, its first in North Carolina, at 521 Haywood Road in West Asheville, the former location of Zia Taqueria. Taco Boy, a beachside taqueria in Charleston that opened in 2006, has been causing a stir for its abundance of tacos and Mexican-inspired food and drinks.
