Check it out! A film is being shot at the historic Biltmore Estate, again. As we settle in to the first hump of the winter season, be sure to get out there and nab some quality time playing games (things like Trivia nights or chugging back some oysters) with your neighbors. Local hangouts are a good way to make these chillier times go by with a sense of warmth and connection; not to mention a full happy belly.

Local Business Briefs

Asheville continues to surprise us with having one of the best artisanal bread..

  • A week before Christmas, Clint and Meghan DeWitt, who are both 35, bought the Main Street bakery from Mike and Kathy Cole. It was a holiday season that neither of the couples will ever forget. The bakery had been owned by the Coles for the previous 28 years. According to DeWitt, everything will remain largely unchanged. They mentioned he and his wife had been thinking about selling it for a while, but they were waiting on the right time and the right people to sell it to.
  • The Biltmore Estate in Asheville is the primary location for a new Hallmark film now being shot there, but Hendersonville appears to be included alongside the historic home. The Historic Train Depot will be filmed in front of Maple Street on January 27 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., per a special event application that Hendersonville City Council accepted on January 5 as part of its consent agenda. The proposal states that Seventh Avenue and sidewalks will also be sporadically closed during filming, which is anticipated to last only two or three minutes at a time.
  • First appearing at the King Apple Parade, they  highlighted Hendersonville’s annual Apple Festival, and have since become a popular at neighborhood parades in Hendersonville. The Apple Tart Queens are what they name themselves, but who exactly are they and what do they do? After the early-December Hendersonville Christmas Parade, one of the most recent non-profit organizations received some advice from Judi Donofrio, one of the founder members.
  • One of the newest restaurants to enter Asheville’s culinary scene is Mikasa Criolla, a Peruvian fusion diner. The S&W Market, a food hall in the center of downtown, is where the fast-casual concept debuted on December 1. Peruvian chef Santiago Vargas of Lima brings his enthusiasm for showcasing foreign influences on regional cuisine. Hearty main dishes, sandwiches, empanadas, and the pisco sour, Peru’s national cocktail, are all available.
  • With the establishment of numerous new bakeries and the return of the 16th Annual Asheville Bread Festival in April 2023, Asheville’s history of uniting artisanal bakers continues to grow. Follow your taste buds to the recently established second site of Old World Levain (OWL) Bakery in North Asheville. This restaurant has a devoted following because to its organically leavened breads and beautiful European-inspired pastries created by Susannah Gebhart, a pastry chef nominated for a James Beard Award.
