Caregivers “1,000 Books” Program Off to Good Start in Buncombe

Buncombe County Public Libraries has launched a 1,000 Books Before Kindergarten program, and they're inviting parents and caregivers to pick up a free journal to log the titles being read to preschoolers.

Buncombe Rejects GE’s $500k Claim

On a 6-1 vote, the Buncombe County Commissioners decided not to grant GE almost $500,000 in requested tax refunds. Three different companies under the GE umbrella all listed the same taxable properties on their tax returns not once, but two years in a row. The accounting error made by GE was being appealed years after the county had to set its budget, and it did not fall into any of the categories under which the state allows county commissioners to grant refunds.

Pride Week in Buncombe

A lot of Pride Month celebrations this year are focused on combatting restrictive legislation that would limit the right of minors to undergo permanent gender-altering procedures, give their parents access to school records disclosing a child's identification with a gender other than the one they use at home, and use biological gender as a criterion for restroom, shower, and sports team assignments.

Buncombe Passes Bitcoin Mining Moratorium

The Buncombe County Commissioners placed a moratorium on bitcoin mining that will be in effect for a year or until they adopt land use ordinances regulating their construction, whichever comes first. This will give staff time to investigate extreme claims made by both advocates and opponents.
