Weaverville – Howard Ray Cole, a beloved figure in Weaverville, passed away on December 9, 2024, at the age of 79. Born on July 7, 1945, in Buncombe County, Howard dedicated much of his life to serving his community and sharing his remarkable stories.
A proud US Navy veteran, Howard served during the Vietnam War with the Navy Attack Squadron 196, completing two deployments. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to co-found Cole Vending Co., Inc., where he served as president for nearly five decades. His leadership extended beyond business; he was a past president of both the North Carolina Amusement Machine Association and the Amusement and Music Operators Association.
Howard’s commitment to service was evident in his involvement with various organizations. He was a member and Past Master of Blackmer Masonic Lodge, held a 32nd degree in Scottish Rite, and was part of The Oasis Shrine. Additionally, he contributed to the Waynesville American Legion post 47 and Waynesville VFW post 5202. His faith was also important to him as a member of Pleasant Grove Union Church.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Brenda Massey Cole; son Paul Zumwalt and wife Kelly; sister Tammy McGiffin McMahan; stepmother Isabel Mackey Cole; grandchildren Ameron Zumwalt Fisher and husband Nate, Joseph Zumwalt and wife Morgan; and great-granddaughter Parker Rose Fisher.
A funeral service was held at 11:00 am on December 13, 2024, at West Funeral Home, officiated by Rev. Mike Holder and Rev. Ray Bailey. Masonic rites and military honors will follow at Clark’s Chapel Cemetery. The family and friends gathered for visitation on December 12, 2024, at West Funeral Home.
